What Anesthesia To Expect With A Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Before surgery, a lot of people get really anxious as to what to expect during a wisdom tooth extraction. Fortunately, the procedure is fairly simple for most people and really is nothing to fear. However, many people are not well educated as to what happens during the surgery, and this can raise their anxiety level. This post will explain the anesthesia we use during a procedure, just to help put your mind at rest prior to your op.

The surgical process to remove a wisdom tooth generally takes around 45 minutes to complete. Before we start to work on those painful teeth, we will provide you with anesthesia to help keep the pain at bay during your extraction. Depending on the extent of the procedure, we will administer one of these three options of anesthesia: Local anesthetic, IV sedation or general anesthetic.

A local anesthetic may be used if the surgery is not too complicated. This generally involves an injection of a numbing agent to the gum around the teeth. You may even have access to gas and air during the procedure. This method is the most common form of anesthesia during a tooth extraction, and will allow you to stay awake during the procedure.

IV sedation can sometimes be given in addition to a local anesthesia application. With this, we will first numb the gum and then administer additional sedatives via an IV drip in the arm. This allows for greater relaxation, especially for more anxious patients; many of whom dose off during the surgery.

General anesthesia is usually applied to more complex cases, or in cases where more than one tooth may be removed. For this, you will be given a sedative that will allow you to sleep during the surgery and will allow you to rest for an additional hour post op.

Which ever form of anesthesia we use, you can be sure that you will feel no pain during your extraction. We will discuss the options with you prior to surgery.

The Importance of Good Dental Hygiene

We’re told every day as kids to make sure we brush our teeth first thing in the morning and before bed. As we grow, we are also encouraged to floss after each meal, but many people neglect to do either of these things on a frequent basis. While you might think it’s okay to brush once a day and floss once in a while, that’s really not the case. Taking care of your teeth isn’t just an aesthetic thing, it’s also essential for your health.

Many people don’t know that tooth decay can not only lead to cavities and tooth loss; it is also linked to heart disease. Taking care of your smile doesn’t just save your teeth, it can also save your life.

We see people every day who have neglected their dental hygiene routine and now need dental implants because their teeth had decayed to a point beyond saving. While dental implants do resemble your real teeth and are durable, the pain and hassle associated with loosing your teeth is not pleasant. It can all simply be avoided by practicing good, basic dental hygiene in the first place.

If you have missing teeth due to decay, consider calling us and letting Dr. Wong evaluate your case. She will be able to provide you with the advanced dental treatment you need to help you get your smile back.

Why Remove Your Wisdom Teeth?

Every year, we see hundreds of patients with painful or impacted wisdom teeth. For most, the only solution is to remove those pesky teeth in order to relieve constant pain. For others, their wisdom teeth can cause overcrowding, thus causing problems for other teeth surrounding them. While the surgery itself can be pretty painful, the benefits by far outweigh the continuing pain people suffer with problematic wisdom teeth.

Wisdom tooth extraction can be performed either under local or general anesthetic, depending on how bad the problem is. Both procedures are relatively simple for a dental specialist to perform and the surgery can most often be performed in the dental office, rather than a hospital. This means less hassle and less downtime following the procedure as patients are generally able to go home within an hour of the extraction being performed.

If you are having pain or problems with your wisdom teeth, give us a call. We will be able to evaluate your dental problems and arrange for further treatment to extract those painful wisdom teeth.

Dental Implants or Dentures?

For most people, having missing teeth can really ruin your self esteem. You may no longer wish to smile in family photos, or feel really self conscious when talking with new people. However, there are options in place to help you regain your beautiful smile.

A few years ago, people looking to replace missing teeth only had the option of dentures. These days, thanks to awesome research and technology, people can now opt to have more permanent dental implants. Deciding between which option to choose is personal to each patient and their specific needs.

Dentures are the more traditional option. A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and tissues. Two different types of dentures are available, partial and complete. Partial dentures feature just a couple of replacement teeth, where as complete denture sets feature a full set of teeth. Dentures are often uncomfortable and required specific care in addition to your general dental routine.

By contrast, implants are a more permanent option. Dental implants are prosthetic teeth which are screwed into the jaw. Implants can be cleaned and flosses, just like your regular teeth. They also look more authentic than dentures, which often look more artificial.

If you are considering dental implants, contact Dr. Wong for a consultation.
